Six minarets, a spacious courtyard and blue Iznik tiles reveal the quiet elegance of Ottoman architecture in Sultanahmet.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is instantly recognisable by its six minarets above historic Istanbul. Built in the early seventeenth century, it is widely known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tones of its Iznik tilework. Cascading domes, floral decoration and light entering through many windows give the interior its distinctive atmosphere.
Begin in the courtyard before looking closely at the decoration and proportions of the prayer hall. Combine the visit with Sultanahmet Square and Hagia Sophia opposite. This remains an active place of worship, and tourist access may pause during prayers. Cover shoulders and knees; women should bring a scarf. Follow posted footwear and dress instructions, speak quietly and ask permission before photographing people.
Take time to appreciate the Iznik tiles, domes and courtyard. Combine your visit with nearby Hagia Sophia.
